Area guide
The seat of the Bangsamoro government, and the easiest door into the region.
Cotabato City sits on the Rio Grande de Mindanao a few kilometers upriver from the sea, and it is the one place in BARMM where a visitor arriving with no local contacts can simply check in, eat well and walk around. It voted to join the region in the 2019 plebiscite and now hosts the Bangsamoro Government Center, which means it also has the hotel rooms, ATMs, hospitals and daily Manila flights that a seat of government accumulates.
It is an old city rather than a new capital. The Rio Grande made it the natural center of the Maguindanao Sultanate, and the layers are still legible: Pedro Colina Hill, fortified by the Spanish and still the place you climb for the view over the delta; the Kutawato caves running underneath it; the Tamontaka church built for a mission settlement in the 1870s; and above all the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid on the edge of town, the largest mosque in the country, paid for by the Sultan of Brunei.
One thing confuses almost every visitor and is worth settling early: the city is geographically surrounded by Maguindanao del Norte but is not part of it. It is an area of its own in BARMM, and it is not the provincial capital of anything. Maguindanao del Norte governs from Datu Odin Sinsuat, next door.

Cotabato City is the only place in BARMM with a genuine hotel market. Being the seat of the regional government means a steady flow of officials, contractors, aid workers and delegations, and the rooms exist because of them rather than because of tourism.
The range runs from business hotels with air conditioning, hot water, generators and function rooms down through inns and pensions to very basic lodging near the terminals. The mid-range is the sweet spot and is where most visitors end up.
This is also the one part of the region where the familiar booking sites carry a usable selection, so a traveler can arrive with a confirmed room and no local contact.
Around Parliament sessions, the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival in December, and Eid. Book ahead for those.
Nothing on this page has been verified on the ground, and no establishment is endorsed. Lodging in this region opens, closes and changes hands quickly, and the only reliable confirmation is a phone call before you travel. Where a trip depends on a bed being there, confirm it directly with the property or the area’s tourism office.

Routinely visited, and the calmest introduction to the region. Checkpoints on the approach roads are normal and quick. Standard city sense applies and little more, though foreign governments still write advisories covering mainland Mindanao broadly, so a traveler on institutional insurance should read their own before booking.
Comfortable year-round; the city is outside the typhoon belt. Rain is heaviest around the southwest monsoon from June to October. December brings the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival, which is the best week to see the river and the culture on display at once.
Shariff Kabunsuan Festival · December (15 to 19 December per city sources; parade day reported as 19 December in 2024). The festival marks the early-16th-century arrival of Shariff Kabunsuan, who brought Islam to mainland Mindanao. Its highlight is the Guinakit fluvial parade of decorated royal boats on the Tamontaka River at Kalanganan II, with street dancing, an Inaul fashion show and food showcases.
Araw ng Cotabato (City Charter Day) · June, building up to the 20 June charter anniversary (the 67th was in 2026). This week-long city founding celebration is the city's biggest, with kite flying, fluvial parades, boat races and sports. 20 June is a special non-working day in the city, and the 2026 edition reopened the Kutawato Caves.
Ramadan lights and night markets · Ramadan (month moves each year with the Islamic calendar). Since 2019 the Bangsamoro Government Center has been lit up for Ramadan, with halal food fairs and night markets from iftar into the evening. Muslims and non-Muslims are welcome.
Feast of the Immaculate Conception · December. The city's main Catholic feast, tied to the cathedral and to Tamontaka Church, both dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
Layagan Festival · December. A festival for the city's crab industry, listed among the city's celebrations. We found no recent coverage.
Cotabato City and around
3 nights, based in Cotabato City
The easiest introduction to the region, and the only one you can do with a confirmed hotel booking and no local contacts. Good food, real history, and a coast an hour away.
Cotabato Airport (Awang, CBO) is not in the city but in Barangay Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, with a single 1,900 m runway. Current listings show Philippine Airlines (PAL Express) to Manila, Cebu and Tawi-Tawi, plus small-plane Bangsamoro Airways flights to Jolo and Zamboanga; Cebu Pacific's Cotabato service is listed as terminated. The airport was closed for runway repairs from 22 June to 1 October 2023, so check schedules before booking.
Mindanao Star runs buses from Davao City's Ecoland terminal, a trip of about 5 to 6 hours, and Husky Lines and UV Express vans serve Koronadal and General Santos. Rural Transit runs daily buses to Cagayan de Oro, Pagadian and Dipolog. Each operator uses its own terminal in town, and the city government also runs the Cotabato City Integrated Public Terminal on Bubong Road.
Tricycles and multicabs or jeepneys are the usual way around the city. For outlying spots like the Grand Mosque, one guide suggests a jeepney to the Kalanganan junction and then a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi).
Major Philippine banks have branches downtown, including BDO (with ATM), Landbank, PNB, Metrobank, China Bank, RCBC, EastWest and DBP, and BPI opened a new branch in Poblacion 5 in May 2026.
Globe, Smart and DITO all have coverage maps for the city. DITO switched on 5G at the Bangsamoro Government Center in June 2022.
Most residents are Muslim, and dress is more conservative than elsewhere in the Philippines; cover shoulders and knees, and women cover their hair inside mosques. During Ramadan, many eateries stay closed until the fast breaks at dusk, and visitors should avoid eating or drinking in public in daytime.
Expect routine police and military checkpoints on highways into the region. PC Hill is a police and military reservation, so ask before photographing there. Several governments' travel advisories cover central Mindanao; the UK, for example, advises against all travel to western and central Mindanao, which can affect travel insurance.
Cotabato Regional and Medical Center on Sinsuat Avenue is the main government hospital, with 600 authorised beds, and several private hospitals are in the city centre. The Cotabato City Police Office and its stations are on and around PC Hill.
