Safety in Lanao del Sur
The security picture here is more variable than in Cotabato City or Tawi-Tawi, and it moves. Marawi itself is visited, but travel is best arranged through local contacts, the city tourism office, or MSU, and some outlying municipalities are best left off an itinerary without current local advice. This is the area where asking on the ground matters most, and where a plan made from a distance is least reliable.
Ragang rises to 2,815 metres in the south of Lanao del Sur and has a base about 32 kilometres across. It is part of the Central Mindanao Arc of volcanoes, and Wikipedia calls it the most active volcano on Mindanao.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology lists 8 eruptions, the last in July 1916; some eruptions credited to nearby Makaturing may have been Ragang's.
Its long profile is known locally as the Sleeping Lady, and it is the view from the campsite on Mount Matampor across Lake Lanao.
