Safety in Tawi-Tawi
Generally calm, and the province has worked hard at that reputation. It is the part of BARMM most often recommended to visitors without local ties. Foreign advisories covering the Sulu Archipelago frequently name Tawi-Tawi in the same breath as Sulu and Basilan even though the situations differ; read the current text rather than the headline. Coordinate island trips through the provincial tourism office, which is normal practice here rather than a precaution.
Sanga-Sanga lies between Tawi-Tawi Island to the east and Bongao Island to the south, and its 11 barangays all belong to Bongao. Sanga-Sanga Airport, the main airport of the province, is on the island, about 15 minutes from Bongao town.
During the Second World War the island was a major stopover of the Japanese navy; American forces liberated it on 2 April 1945 and it was then used by American and Australian forces.
Walking around Sanga-Sanga you pass large wooden boats being built by local craftsmen, most of them Sama-Bajau. One builder told a SunStar writer that a wooden prahu takes about a year to build, all by hand.
